交际花杜美英因与警探方世华相恋, 力劝当小偷的父亲达生暂避江门, 并改过自新. 世华的父亲宏道旅居海外多年, 家乡产业一直交由其弟宏德管理, 临终前得知宏德存心夺产, 遂托老仆黄忠遗嘱回国料理家事. 黄忠甫达江门, 钱包与遗嘱即被达生窃去, 达生在情急下将遗嘱丢弃. 由于遗嘱失落, 黄忠遂以样貌酷似宏道的达生假冒主人, 同回故乡. 世华以为眼前的父亲正是他追捕多时的小偷, 拒绝相认. 美英替父亲保守秘密, 却使垂涎于她的宏德以为兄长夺其所爱. 宏德从中挑衅, 令世华的母亲误会丈夫欲染指未来媳妇, 黄忠唯有将真相揭露, 众人始如梦初醒. 宏德以死无对证为理由, 迫世华交出产业. 幸好这时遗嘱被寻获送还, 使宏德无法得逞. 世华与美英终共谐连理, 达生喜为岳父, 皆大欢喜。In 1966, a famous actor (Peter O'Toole) is taken by a rowboat to a fabulous old hotel on an island in the middle of a lake.
