影片根据Solomon Northup在1853年所著传记小说《黑奴十二年》（Twelve Years a Slave）改编。该作来自Solomon Northup亲身经历，他本是一个生活在纽约的自由的黑人，受过教育且已婚。随后遇到两个人，他们许诺在华盛顿帮他找一份工作，当Northup到了华盛顿才发现自己被诱拐绑架了，从此开始了他的奴隶生涯。经历多年磨难才依靠一个好心的加拿大人帮忙送信回家，经过一场诉讼，他重获自由。。莎莉 (程可为) 与小云 (高妙思) 住在一起，莎莉为人负责肯承担，常常会为人出头，对小云尤其好，可谓「万事有我」就「搞掂」。 小云则是个青春少艾，为人活泼精灵，但因为年龄上的差距，与莎莉的想法时有出入，带出不少笑话。 罗大利夫妇 (甘国亮林建明) 租住莎莉寓所二楼，他们的洋化作风，与莎莉更是格格不入，因而常常产生冲突，莎莉为人虽然坚强，但为了屋中各人，经常烦恼不已。。“Vampirina,” is based on the children’s books by Anne Maria Pace and inspired by the Disney Jr. animated series from Chris Nee.
