林强盛作为强盛集团董事长，得知旗下老煤沟矿山连续三年发生重大事故，让矿业总经理陈建发回家反省，并决定以矿工身份前去暗访调查，查明事情真相。不料到了以后，却发现老煤沟矿山主任王大江竟贩卖职工名额，林强盛与其争辩，竟遭到了绑架恐吓。。二十世纪初年，上海林记粮行老板林威成，家大业大，妻妾成群，但仍不满足地纳了唱大鼓戏的女戏子芙蓉为妾。芙蓉念念不忘老情人张杰。两人暗地幽会，直到芙蓉产下一子，才东窗事发。林威成一怒之下，逼芙蓉上吊自尽，张杰被打成残废扔进河里。不满周岁的儿子，被扔到乱葬岗喂野狗。幸好孩子被车夫贾六发现，正巧赵婶刚生下一女，贾六拜托赵婶顺便哺育此子，为二人取名为美梦、成真。。Centers on the Kilcher family and their community outside Homer, Alaska.
